CAIRN: A Contemporary Evolution of Lanna Lantern Craft “Reinterpreting traditional Lanna bamboo-and-mulberry paper lanterns into modern lighting design.”

Inspired by traditional Lanna lantern craftsmanship, CAIRN combines handcrafted bamboo frames with mulberry paper. The form is redesigned into a stacked, stone-like silhouette, symbolizing calm and balance. Soft light diffuses through the paper surface, while the integrated steel structure enhances durability and contemporary character.

Traditional northern Thai lanterns were closely connected to ritual and communal life. CAIRN translates this heritage into a modern interior object — preserving material authenticity while refining proportion and structure for contemporary spaces. It represents the evolution of craft, where tradition is not preserved as nostalgia, but transformed through design.

Handcrafted bamboo frame, mulberry paper, and steel structure.
