CHADA MALI

Indoor Container

This work reinterprets the notion of the ‘urban talisman’ through the integration of contemporary belief objects with spire forms derived from Thai and Burmese art and architecture, creating a new design language for spiritual anchoring within the urban context.

The zebra, as a votive offering commonly found at spirit houses, is abstracted and merged with the architectural ‘spire’—a significant element in sacred structures such as stupas, prasad towers, and the Burmese hti finial—symbolizing the connection between the human and the divine realms. The use of a gilded surface, combined with the spire structure, elevates the object from a street-level offering into a contemporary talisman imbued with ritualistic meaning, one that can be worn or integrated into everyday life.

Within Thailand’s syncretic belief system, the spire form is not merely an architectural element but a symbol of the cosmic axis and spiritual ascension. When translated into small-scale objects such as jewelry or talismans, it becomes a new medium that bridges traditional belief with modern urban living. This work reflects how, despite Bangkok’s rapid modernization, symbolic structures of faith—both in the form of the zebra and the spire—continue to be reproduced, adapted, and deeply embedded within the collective consciousness.
