CHADA SPROUT

Rice and Soup Bowl

This work reinterprets the spire form in Thai art and architecture, focusing on the lotus-bud finial (dok bua tum) from the Lanna and Sukhothai periods. Commonly seen atop stupas—particularly the chedi song phum khao bin form—this element symbolizes purity, spiritual growth, and the path toward enlightenment in Buddhist cosmology.

The design abstracts the distinctive tapered silhouette of the lotus bud into a refined contemporary form. Its vertical, ascending geometry becomes the central language, translating a monumental architectural feature into a human-scale object suitable for everyday use. By simplifying its structure while retaining symbolic essence, the work balances cultural depth with modern aesthetics.

Materiality and surface treatments further enhance its presence, often drawing from traditional finishes while embracing minimal, contemporary expression. Through this transformation, the lotus-bud spire evolves from a sacred architectural detail into a functional object, bridging historical meaning with present-day living and allowing cultural heritage to be experienced in an intimate, accessible way.
