Lacquered Figure Tattoo Narratives
This work explores the art of traditional lacquerware through the narrative of tattooing, drawing from Lanna sak yan practices and parallel tattoo cultures across the world. The piece takes the form of a half-body human figure, serving as both a sculptural object and a symbolic vessel of belief, identity, and protection.
Using lacquer techniques, the surface becomes a storytelling medium where tattoo motifs are carefully composed onto the body. In Lanna culture, sak yan embodies spiritual protection, discipline, and sacred geometry, while in other cultures, tattooing similarly represents rites of passage, status, or personal memory. By bringing these traditions together, the work highlights the universality of marking the body as a site of meaning.
The layered lacquer finish enhances depth and tactility, echoing the permanence and intimacy of tattooed skin. This transformation shifts lacquerware from decorative craft into a narrative form, bridging ritual, identity, and contemporary artistic expression.
