MEKHALA

Head Dress with Lighting Post

A three-dimensional reinterpretation of Thai shadow play craftsmanship, transforming the iconic Thai chada headdress into a floral crown that narrates through ornament rather than character.

Executed using the traditional Nang Yai leather punching and carving technique. Constructed in a three-dimensional form inspired by the Thai chada headdress, a key identity of classical Thai performance. Inspired by the celestial figure Mekhala from Thai literature such as Ramakien. Replaces figurative storytelling with ascending floral and vine motifs. Mounted on a teak base with integrated lighting to project intricate shadows.

The chada symbolizes divinity and celestial hierarchy in Thai classical arts. Traditionally, shadow puppetry conveyed narrative through character silhouettes.
MEKHALA shifts from narrative depiction to ornamental abstraction, allowing floral motifs to embody natural vitality and spiritual ascent. Illumination transforms the object into a performative installation, where shadow becomes an extension of form. By elevating leather punch craft into sculptural headwear, the work sustains traditional technique while redefining its expressive and spatial potential.
