SIAMESE ROUGH BRUSH: The Khoi Tree in Contemporary Thai Sculptural Form A sculptural table stand inspired by the Thai native Khoi tree, reinterpreting its presence in traditional lacquer-gilded door motifs into a contemporary environmental statement.
Branching brass structures echo the characteristic form of the Khoi tree, often shaped in Thai bonsai tradition.
Etched brass plates reference the rhythmic lines of traditional Thai gilded lacquer motifs.
The design draws from imagery found in Lai Rod Nam—ornamental tree motifs commonly depicted on temple doors and classical Thai art. The Khoi tree, scientifically known as Streblus asper, has long been cultivated in temple and palace gardens.
In Thai cultural landscapes, the Khoi tree represents resilience and continuity. Traditional lacquer art often portrayed stylized trees as symbolic landscapes, embodying harmony between humanity and nature. SIAMESE ROUGH BRUSH transforms these two-dimensional motifs into three-dimensional sculptural furniture, relocating sacred botanical imagery into contemporary domestic space.
By foregrounding a native Thai species, the work highlights environmental preservation and the importance of sustaining local ecological heritage in a rapidly modernizing world.
