KONG-GA-PAN

Bench

A contemporary bench integrating the traditional leather punch technique of Thai shadow play from Ratchaburi Province, preserving endangered craftsmanship while narrating animal figures from Thai literature.

Created in collaboration with a master artisan of Nang Yai from Ratchaburi. Utilizes hand-punched and intricately carved cowhide leather panels. Animal motifs are inspired by characters from classical Thai literature such as Ramakien. The hammering and piercing process resembles ritual tattooing, embedding narrative into the material surface. Rattan and steel structures transform the traditionally performative object into functional furniture.

Nang Yai is a refined performing art that merges literature, craftsmanship, and storytelling. Animal figures in Thai epics symbolize moral forces, nature, and mythic power. By relocating this sacred craft into contemporary design, KONG-GA-PAN extends its lifespan beyond theatrical performance. The title references the belief in protective tattoos (“kong-ga-pan” meaning invulnerable), metaphorically suggesting that cultural heritage endures when continuously reinterpreted. The work advocates for sustainable preservation of Thai artisanal knowledge through adaptive contemporary use.
