WASUN

Traditional Shadow Play Art Vessel

A fusion of Thai shadow play leather craftsmanship and traditional banana leaf folding culture, translating ocean wave patterns into a functional sculptural vessel.

Created using the traditional Nang Yai leather punching technique, composed of hundreds of tiny perforations. The vessel’s structure references Thai banana leaf folding traditions used in ceremonial food presentation. Wave motifs emerge from dotted perforation patterns.  Selective gold leaf application enhances light reflection and depth. Functions both as a serving container and decorative object.

Banana leaf folding is a Thai vernacular craft associated with ritual, hospitality, and sustainability. While banana leaves are ephemeral, leather provides durability—transforming a temporary organic form into a lasting sculptural object. The wave pattern symbolizes continuity, rhythm, and the ecological movement of water.
Each perforated dot suggests a droplet; collectively they form a sea. WASUN embodies the dialogue between fragility and permanence, nature and craft, tradition and contemporary utility.
