Refining Natural Eco-Plate

SMUKK: Simplifying Lacquerware through Samuk Transforming Samuk — the foundational putty layer of traditional lacquerware — into a primary material that simplifies production while adding odor-absorbing functionality.

Samuk is traditionally made from paddy-field ash mixed with leftover lacquer, used to fill woven bamboo surfaces in Northern Thai lacquerware communities such as Nantaram Village Instead of proceeding through multiple lacquer layers, SMUKK highlights this early-stage material and leverages its carbon content for natural odor absorption.

Traditional lacquerware requires extensive time and labor, often disproportionate to production costs. SMUKK proposes a streamlined approach that supports artisans economically while maintaining cultural knowledge, transforming a preliminary process into a contemporary, functional food container suitable for refrigeration.
