Modular Lantern
CHOCHIN OBAKE: Reframing the Festival Lantern Reviving the disappearing Chinese lantern craft of Charoenkrung and transforming it into a modular contemporary lighting object.
Inspired by traditional bamboo and mulberry paper lanterns seen during street festivals, the piece retains handcrafted techniques. Its modular form allows multiple units to be arranged together, generating shifting patterns and spatial compositions.
The Chinese lantern-making tradition in Charoenkrung is gradually fading within Bangkok’s urban transformation. CHOCHIN OBAKE reinterprets this ritual object as a contemporary lighting sculpture, preserving cultural memory while adapting it to modern interiors.
