RAK MAKI – E: Reviving Lanna Engraved Motifs through Gilded Lacquer Revitalizing endangered Lanna incised patterns by combining Thai gilded lacquer techniques with the cross-cultural practice of Maki-e.
Inspired by Lanna engraved lacquer motifs found in Northern Thai temples, including Wat Phra Singh in Chiang Mai. The technique parallels Maki-e, where designs are incised into lacquer and filled with gold or silver powder before being sealed with additional lacquer layers.
Gilded lacquer is a significant Thai artistic heritage, especially in the Lanna region of Northern Thailand. RAK MAKI – E transforms a vanity container into a micro-surface of preservation, where disappearing local craftsmanship meets refined contemporary design.
