SAWADDEE LUCKY CAT: Auspicious Felines in Benjarong Tradition Reviving the nearly lost stories of Thailand’s auspicious cat breeds through the ceremonial language of Benjarong porcelain.
The design draws from illustrations of 17 auspicious Thai cat breeds recorded in traditional Thai folding manuscripts known as Samut Khoi. Only a few of these breeds are believed to survive today. Selected feline motifs preserved in manuscripts held by the British Library are reinterpreted onto seven-color Benjarong ceramics.
In Thai belief, certain cat breeds symbolize prosperity, protection, and good fortune. Benjarong ware, historically crafted as refined gifts for nobility and respected individuals, reinforces the idea of blessing and honor. This bowl translates a local spiritual narrative into a universally recognizable symbol of luck and goodwill.
